Mare
Thunder.
Thunder drove her down the mountain.
Thunder from behind the mountain.
I heard her before I saw her.
A steady canter through
heavy night.
Steel shoes.
Chipped pavement.
Lightning the color
of fire
and creation
ignited the eastern sky.
Thunder.
She found our rain tree.
I heard her hooves
crush the seeds.
And her body.
I approached
slowly.
Thunder.
Lightning.
Hair black like fresh rock,
slick and shining.
I stayed with her
until the boars began their search
for rotted mango
and the first drops
fell.
