Join The Berkeley Pulse

A student-run media collective built around media, creativity, community, and workshop — for people who want to make things, not just talk about them.

The Berkeley Pulse is not a club you join to pad a résumé. It’s a space for students who want to write, report, interview, create, and publish — collaboratively and publicly. We prioritize voice, growth, and real output over rigid hierarchy or institutional media rules.

What We Are / What We’re Not

What We Are

  • A student-run media collective at UC Berkeley

  • Workshop-driven (you learn by doing)

  • Founder-forward and contributor-led

  • A mix of journalism, creative writing, interviews, and multimedia

  • A space to experiment, publish, and grow in public

What We’re Not

  • ❌ A traditional newsroom

  • ❌ A résumé factory

  • ❌ A rigid hierarchy with endless meetings

How It Works (Week-to-Week Flow)

Weekly Workshop Flow

  • Quick spotlight — what we’re building this week

  • Mini-lesson (10–15 min)

  • Work time (drafting, interview planning, editing, publishing help)

  • Optional share-outs

  • Next steps + publishing opportunities

Rotating Workshop Topics

  • Interview prep & asking better questions

  • Public speaking workshop focused on media-forward speech

  • Creative writing craft (image, line, rhythm, revision)

  • Open mic performance focusing on Black and Latino voices

  • Publishing workflow: draft → edit → post → promote

Ways to Get Involved (Low Pressure, Real Contribution)

You don’t need experience.
You don’t need to “apply” for prestige.
You just need curiosity and follow-through.

Ways people contribute:

  • Writing (sports, culture, creative, opinion)

  • Interviewing people on and around campus

  • Helping with social clips and captions

  • Photography or video

  • Editing, organizing, or publishing help

  • Helping run workshops or open mics

You can start small. You can shift roles. You can grow into leadership

Open Mic & Creative Forum (Black & Latino Voices)

This deserves its own block.

Creative Open Mic & Forum (Launching Soon)
In partnership with ASUC (Margaret Solomon), we’re hosting an open creative forum and mic centering Black and Latino voices — poetry, music, storytelling, dance, and conversation.

This space is about expression, not performance pressure.
Listening counts as participation.

Who This Is For

  • Writers who want feedback and publication

  • Students curious about journalism but unsure where they fit

  • Creatives who don’t feel at home in institutional spaces

  • People who want to build something from the ground up

  • Anyone who believes media should feel human again
