I didn’t know what the Gap Band meant by “Yearning for Your Love” until I lost you.
I didn’t know that meant reaching for my phone to text you but realizing I don’t have that privilege anymore
I didn’t know that meant seeing you in my dreams and only in my dreams
I didn’t know it meant writing you this poem during my break, crying on the bench
I didn’t know it meant not using the cologne you bought me to hold onto the few pieces of you I have left
I didn’t know that meant fighting for you without realizing it was too late
I didn’t know
And for that I’ll always be sorry
But if I did know all of this
I’d still choose to have my heart broken a million times over just for the chance to get it right once.
