Passenger Seat

All I’ve ever wanted was to feel the wind caressing my hair
The sunlight laid on my skin.
My whole life, sitting in the passenger seat.
My whole life, yearning for the control.
I get a taste of it--every now and then.
I feel the thrill of it--the leather beneath my fingers.
The control is enough to send me into a high--

High.
Getting high.
Getting far away.

In a dream where the road flies beneath me.
Windows rolled down, tires spinning endlessly.
I’m at the wheel, steering, cruising, leading by my own hands.
It’s my choice.

My life.
So forgive me if I hold this strife.
Because I’m treated as a child.
And expected to behave as an adult.
One day, my hands will hold the wheel.
And I won’t look back.
Until then, I’ll hold my breath.
I’ll tie up my hair.

Yearning for the day when I’ll be in the driver’s seat.
